Funfair fee increased

A FAIRGROUND operator is to be charged more for coming to Goring this summer.

Mason’s Carnival Funfair, of Reading, has been visiting the village for almost two decades and wants to return for six days this year.

It has previously rented Sheepcot Recreation Ground from the parish council for £300 a year but will now be asked to pay £400 per day.

The council says it needs more money to pay for harrowing, spiking and fertilising the site. It had proposed £500 a day but reduced this after talks with Arthur Meech, the fair’s owner, who said it would be unviable.

Mr Meech said the fee was higher than in villages like Cholsey, where he pays £250 a week, adding: “For £500 a day we’d have to raise our prices to unaffordable levels. We’re a treat for families once they’ve paid their bills and we’re struggling ourselves.”

Councillor John Wills said Mason’s had always looked after the site well.
