Councillors object to Market Place shop sign

TOWN councillors have objected to an illuminated sign outside the new Bensons for Beds shop in Market Place, Henley, formerly Cargo.

TOWN councillors have objected to an illuminated sign outside the new Bensons for Beds shop in Market Place, Henley, formerly Cargo.

The company installed the sign and a hanging sign when the store opened last month.

Councillors say the signs contravene the shop front design guide and have recommended that a retrospective planning application is refused by South Oxfordshire District Council. Speaking at a planning committee meeting, Councillor Will Hamilton said: “It’s in the conservation area and they shouldn’t have done it.”

Mayor Lorraine Hillier added: “If it was a restaurant which could stay open past 5.30pm then they could have it illuminated but it isn’t.”

Councillor Simon Smith said: “We objected to a similar issue with Royal China, so we can’t let Bensons get away with it.”

A decision will be made by the district council later this month.
