UP to £4,000 could be spent by Henley Town Council on launching a volunteer group to help prevent late-night antisocial behaviour in the town.

The idea was put forward by Councillor Lorraine Hillier following a successful campaign by street pastors during last year’s Henley Royal Regatta to help people who had too much to drink.

The volunteers spent each night from the Wednesday to Saturday in the town centre handing out bottles of water and lollipops to help restore drinkers’ blood sugar levels.

Cllr Hillier told a meeting of the council’s town and community committee that the money was needed for training, uniforms and criminal records checks.

Councillor Kellie Hinton said: “If every festival put in £50 or £100 then we would have the money and we might not need to fund the full amount ourselves.”

The full council will make a final decision on June 14.
