A COUNCILLOR from Sonning Common has been made chairman of South Oxfordshire District Council.

A COUNCILLOR from Sonning Common has been made chairman of South Oxfordshire District Council.

Conservative Paul Harrison, 58, of Orchard Avenue, was elected unanimously by the council&rsquos other 35 members after serving as vice-chairman for the past year.

He will hold the chairman&rsquos post for a year and his responsibilities will include representing the area at events and chairing council meetings.

Cllr Harrison, who works for an IT software company,  said: “I started on Thursday and I&rsquove already been to three events. It&rsquos certainly going to be a full diary. Effectively you give up any social side and it has to fit around your paying job, particularly in my case because I am employed full- time.”

Cllr Harrison has been a member of the council since 2004 and currently represents the Sonning Common ward along with fellow Conservative Will Hall.

He also served as a parish councillor for 10 years in two separate five-year stints.

Cllr Harrison&rsquos charities for his year in office are the Ministry Aviation Fellowship, the British Heart Foundation and the British Liver Trust.
