Mayor to back youth charities

THE Mayor of Henley has chosen the two other charities he will support during his year in office.

THE Mayor of Henley has chosen the two other charities he will support during his year in office.

Councillor Julian Brookes, who was elected last month, will be raising money for Riverside Counselling and the Nomad youth and community project, both based in Henley.

Proceeds from civic functions will be shared between these two and the Henley YMCA, of which Cllr Brookes is a trustee and which he nominated at the time of his election.

He said all three shared his goal of improving life for the town’s young people.

The Mayor said: “They make a valuable contribution to life in Henley and most of the services they deliver are focused on the town.

“With our children’s centres facing closure, I wanted to make whatever difference I could. They provide important opportunities for those who want to help themselves.”

The first fund-raiser will be a barn dance at the Thames Traditional Boat Festival on Fawley Meadows, off Marlow Road, on July 16 at 7pm.

There will be live music by folk band Tanglefoot, a buffet supper and a complimentary drink. Tickets cost £25 and must be booked by July 8. Call (01491) 419444.
