Visitors stroll to victory

THE annual visit of FLEET STREET STROLLERS to HURLEY on Sunday turned out to be a one-sided affair with the hosts fielding just 10 players.

Mo Basharat won the toss and asked the visitors to bat first. Basharat and Dave Walton opened the attack against Jono Addis and John Low and despite a tidy opening spell from Basharat, conceding only 29 runs from 11 overs, the batsmen plundered runs at the other end as Walton struggled to find any rhythm.

Basharat shuffled his pack of bowlers in an attempt to find a breakthrough but the opening partnership had reached three figures before Nigel Haines ended it, bowling Low via inside edge and pad. There was no respite for the Hurley fielders as Selby smashed the ball to the boundary with alarming regularity, reaching his half century off 23 deliveries.

It took a good catch by substitute fielder Duff to stop the carnage and give Haines his second wicket. Addis reached his century before cutting loose, adding a further 45 from 3.3 overs with Oliver before strollers declared on 243-2.

In response the depleted Hurley batting line-up had little hope of chasing down the total. Yasir Ali was pressed into service as opener with Shoaib Kayani. The opening partnership reached 13, all off the bat of Kayani, before he was bowled by Duff.

Four more wickets fell for the addition of only eight runs as Macaulay accounted for Gul and Basharat before bowling Hassan Gul and debutant Danesh Wasim with consecutive deliveries.

The veteran pairing of Mike Walton and Nigel Haines added some respectability to the Hurley innings with a partnership of 30 in 18 overs. Walton was finally undone by Keightley, edging low to Addis behind the stumps.

Dave Walton fell lbw off the next delivery to leave Hurley teetering on the brink at 51 with one wicket remaining. Paul McDermott joined Haines and managed to take the match into the last hour before falling lbw to Keightley to bring the match to an end with the Strollers recording victory by 186 runs.
