THE first race of this season’s Oxfordshire Road Race League was held on Tuesday of last week at the Weston on the Green airfield and hosted by Bicester Millennium CC.
GS Henley fielded 14 riders split into an A team of nine riders and B team of five. The rules were such that the times were taken on the fifth man across the line so the B team had their work cut out.
Representing GS Henley A were Rob King, Rob Friend, Martin Cairns, Simon Jones, Dan Marett, Simon Barbour, Gavin Spiers, Pete Harrison and Pete Beisty.
The team started at a fast pace with the other riders struggling to hold the wheel of Pete Harrison during his turns on the front. After this blistering first lap Henley began to settle into it, but the continued power of Harrison and some big turns from King saw Cairns and Beisty drop off the back after 6.5 miles. Friend lasted another few miles but soon the team were down to six.
With a danger of more riders being shed, at the half way mark they organised themselves and started working together at a more steady, sustainable and settled pace holding a solid rhythm for the remainder of the 25 mile race.
The A team finished in 55 minutes, 35 seconds, a full 92 seconds ahead of nearest rivals Outdoor Traders, beating the seven other men’s teams in the process.
The GS Henley B team were represented by John Rayner, Nick Beech, Blackett Ditchburn, Pierre Jackson and Jamie Swanson.
After losing Blackett in the first half of the race, they put in a solid performance with only four men to finish in 66 minutes, 12 seconds. With no fifth rider to cross the finish line the team were disqualified.
