Would-be mayor beware

HE has at least another nine months before he’s due to put on the chain

HE has at least another nine months before he’s due to put on the chain of office, but Will Hamilton is already planning for life as the mayor of Henley.

The current Deputy Mayor let slip some of the plans for his mayoral year, even though he is not certain to succeed Julian Brookes in May.

Speaking after taking part in this year’s Club to Pub, he said he was looking forward to handing out the medals on the bank next year, one of the duties of the mayor.

Then Cllr Hamilton quickly backtracked, saying: “Hopefully I will be handing out the medals, I know it’s not certain!”

In previous years, the deputy mayor would take over the top job after a year but rules introduced by the Conservatives when they took control of the council last year mean there must now be a formal vote.

As a Tory, Cllr Hamilton is likely to be backed by his party colleagues. If not, rather than wearing the mayoral robes next year, he’ll be back in a wetsuit!
