THE starting arrangements for next year’s renamed Thames Marathon might need to be reviewed.
Competitors in this year’s 14km endurance swim, which runs from Leander Club in Henley to Marlow bridge, had to climb into the river via a pontoon by Lion Meadow.
The first swimmers crowded on to the structure so that it became unbalanced and they were pitched into the cold water and, judging by the shock on their faces, more quickly than they’d have liked!
About half an hour later exactly the same thing happened with the second wave.
Perhaps, to paraphrase the immortal line from Jaws, they’re gonna need a bigger jetty!
