Mistaken Identity

A RADIO presenter got a little too excited during the final of the men’s coxless pairs.

BBC Radio Oxford reporter Lilley Mitchell was reporting live on the race from Leander Club and mistakenly assigned Team GB’s pair of Alan Sinclair and Stewart Innes a silver medal when they finished fourth. The duo were second with 500m of the race to go but were then overtaken by South Africa and Italy.

The reporter seemed to lose track of them in the final straight, apparently mistaking the dark-coloured one-pieces of the South African pair for our boys in navy blue.

As the South Africans crossed the line, she shouted “silver!” and was greeted by looks of confusion on the faces of the disappointed guests at the club.
