HAVE you heard about the new Henley riverside apartments? Concierge, club, gym, infinity pool and good rail connection to the city, prices starting at £514,000 — what’s not to like?

Oops, sorry, I forgot to mention that this is Henley on the Hudson River and the city concerned is New York!

In fact, our area is echoed in many street names across the pond. In particular, Memphis, Tennessee has an estate that includes Sonning Drive, Goringwood Lane, Cavershamwood Lane and Bensonwood Drive.

Orlando, Florida boasts Binfield Court, Frieth Drive, Ipsden Drive, Fingest Court and Britwell Court and off the estate there is a Henley Road.

It seems probable that these were names selected from a British atlas rather than having a specific connection to us.

In particular, the Orlando street names also include various Essex locations, including Snaresbrook, which is now a London suburb.

I’m sure Snaresbrook is a wonderful place but it is hardly consistent nowadays with the bucolic image intended by the Orlando name!

My thanks for Ken Stevens for the research.
