THE organiser of Henley’s Living Advent Calendar has had his hopes that this year’s event would be featured on Blue Peter dashed.
Apparently, the BBC children’s programme didn’t have a presenter available to travel from Manchester for the opening night of December 1.
Richard Rodway, who is organising the calendar for the third year running, told the town council’s Christmas events and decorations sub-committee that he was excited when he received a call from the corporation.
He said: “It was from Blue Peter and I discussed it with them. The idea was for them to come to the opening night when there is that bit of pageantry and a big ensemble. They wanted to show it in mid-December but the latest update is that, as they had left it late, they don’t have the presenters available.
“Nevertheless, it is an indication of how well the event is being received and that there is real enthusiasm for the living advent calendar, which I think is great for the town.
“I get calls and emails asking me about where to go to eat and what to do after the calendar performance. I had an email from somebody in Canada who is making it part of her grand tour of the UK when she comes over next month.”
Mr Rodway, a partner at the Head Parnership solicitors, also spoke of the stress of organising 24 nights of entertainment at different venues in the run-up to Christmas.
He said: “I have a recurring nightmare that it’s mid-November and I have nothing ready.
“Mercifully, we are all but ready to go, which means I have time to be flexible and deal with anything that comes up at the last minute, as things often do.”
Let’s hope that everything goes smoothly, even if it’s not on TV.
