Host club put in fastest ever time

HOST crew Henley Dragons triumphed at the third round of the Henley Winter Series on Sunday.

HOST crew Henley Dragons triumphed at the third round of the Henley Winter Series on Sunday.

With plenty of rain in the previous days causing the stream to run faster and strong winds, conditions were not expected to be favourable for good times.

Old rivalries were renewed with Wraysbury looking to remove Rafters from top spot and Henley battling to keep third place from Hurricanes.

The time trial format saw crews setting off at intervals from the Eyot Centre, the faster crews starting later.

Having been released 45 seconds after Hurricanes, Henley caught them at the Temple Island turn and emerged from the turn side by side. A closely fought battle ensued in strong headwinds all the way back to Phyllis Court Club before Henley were able to exert their superiority.

During the battle both crews passed the Worcester/Pershore combined crew and all were passed by Rafters on their way to another dominant win.

Henley set their fastest ever time of 34 minutes 21 seconds to take the honours with the Hurricanes fourth behind Rafters and Wraysbury.

The next round of the series will take place on December 13.
