Strike shuts school

SONNING Common Primary School was closed on Tuesday when members of staff went on strike.

SONNING Common Primary School was closed on Tuesday when members of staff went on strike.

The strike was part of a nationwide day of action by the National Union of Teachers in protest at changes to teachers’ contracts and workload and education funding cuts.

Headteacher Chris Hirst had warned parents of the closure a week beforehand.

He said he had no option as up to 11 teachers could strike but he would not know which ones until the day as they did not have to inform the school whether they would take part.

Mr Hirst said: “The decision to close the school is never taken lightly, but in this instance, where staff have elected to take lawful industrial action, we need to take appropriate steps to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of all pupils.

“We are not allowed to employ additional staff to cover the class, nor are we able to ask other teachers or teaching assistants to provide cover.”

All parents who had paid for school meals or after-school clubs will be refunded.
