Henley Mayor Julian Brookes invited members of the school council at St Mary’s School in St Andrew’s Road to visit him at the town hall. Pupils learned about the role of the mayor and took in the splendour of his parlour that is steeped in tradition. While refreshments were served the children raised topical issues, including air pollution, speeding traffic and crime. The school council is made up of two representatives of each class and allows pupils to represent the views of their classmates democratically. Councillor Brookes was interested to hear the children’s experiences and views of issues that affect the young people of Henley. Year 4 pupil Lucy Triptree invited the Mayor to the school’s 90th birthday celebrations to be held on Thursday, September 15.
