Village school praised by inspectors

SONNING Common Primary School has been awarded a “good” rating by education watchdog Ofsted.

This is an improvement on the “satisfactory” rating given to the school following its last inspection in 2011.

It achieved a good rating in all four areas covered — the achievement of pupils, quality of teaching, behaviour and safety of pupils and leadership and management — as well as overall.

Inspectors visited the school on two days in December and attended 29 lessons or parts of lessons and observed 15 teachers. They also held meetings with groups of pupils, members of the governing body, teachers and support staff.

They said pupils’ achievements had improved considerably since the previous inspection and children in the early years foundation stage were well prepared for year one. Teaching in years three to six was often outstanding.
