Football executive inspires students

FORMER Manchester United chief executive David Gill gave a talk at The Henley College to staff, students, governors and members of the community.

He was originally from Reading and a student at Henley Grammar School, which became part of the college, and several of his former teachers were in the audience.

Mr Gill shared a few extracts from his original school report and memories of his time in Henley.

In the lecture, called “From playing field to boardroom: a career in business and sport”, he talked about his career in accountancy, the car industry and the travel sector before spending 16 years at Manchester United.

During his time as chief executive, the club developed its commercial operations and increased the capacity of Old Trafford to more than 76,000.

Mr Gill oversaw the transfers of players including Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Nemanja Vidic, Michael Carrick and Dimitar Berbatov.

He is still on the club’s board as well as a member of UEFA’s executive committee.

The audience also included 30 pupils from Langtree School in Woodcote.
