Checkendon children win visit from author

CHILDREN at Checkendon Primary School will be visited by award-winning author Michael Morpurgo after winning a national competition.

More than 200 schools entered the contest run by publisher HarperCollins and had to demonstrate how much their pupils loved 30 titles included in Morpurgo Month, a celebration of the author’s books for his 70th birthday.

The Checkendon children compiled a book full of paintings, drawings and photographs which the judges felt stood out from the other entries as it combined creativity with detailed and thought-provoking reviews of all the books featured.

Mr Morpurgo, a former children’s laureate who wrote War Horse and Private Peaceful, will visit the school in the summer term and the school will be given 30 of his books for its library. Acting headteacher Gillian Seymour said: “Staff, parents and children all worked hard to create our entry for the competition, so I am very happy with our win.

“As the children here know, I am a huge fan of Michael Morpurgo and will be every bit as excited as them when he visits.”
