Strike action causes school closures

SCHOOLS in Henley, Sonning Common, Woodcote, Ewelme and Nettlebed were closed today due to national teachers’ strike.

Members of the National Union of Teachers are protesting at performance-related pay and pension changes and what they say are excessive workloads.

In Henley, Valley Road, Trinity and Badgemore primary schools were all closed while Gillotts School was open to pupils in years 10 and 11 only.

In Sonning Common, the primary school was closed and Chiltern Edge School was open to year 11 only.

Ewelme primary was shut and Nettlebed Community School was partially closed.

Langtree School in Woodcote was closed to at least years 7 and 8.

Christine Blower, general secretary of the NUT, said: “Teachers deeply regret the disruption caused to parents and teachers by this strike action.

The Government’s refusal, however, to engage to resolve the dispute means that we have no alternative other than to demonstrate the seriousness of our concerns.”
