Boy’s award-winning story inspired by jigsaw

A MEMBER of the England women’s rugby team that won the world cup in the summer visited the Oratory Preparatory School to present awards to pupils, writes Helen Patchett.

Tamara Taylor, who was once a pupil at the Goring Heath school, was chosen to honour the winners of the Royal Commonwealth Society essay writing competition, which had the theme of “Team Commonwealth” to mark the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Patrick Heath, 12, earned a special commendation after coming third in the competition out of more than 9,500 entrants from schools in 44 Commonwealth countries and territories.

Jonty Winch, head of English, said: “Patrick probably owes his success to an original idea in which he based his interpretation of teamwork on his family’s effort to complete a jigsaw puzzle over an exeat weekend.”

David Merritt and Lana Jackson, both 12, received gold and silver awards respectively.
