Children warned over ‘safe’ playground gates

CHILDREN have been warned not to run through the gates of the playground on Woodcote village green

CHILDREN have been warned not to run through the gates of the playground on Woodcote village green.

Several youngsters have been hurt when the gates bounced back on their heads.

The village green committee has urged parents to ensure their children take care while it investigates ways to make the gates safe to use.

The self-closing gates, which were installed six years ago, meet the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents’ safety standards. However, if they are pushed open too forcefully, they can bounce back. The committee, which regularly inspects the gates, says they are needed to keep the playground safe and cannot install a kissing gate instead because it would restrict access for disabled children.

Chairman Sam Peates said: “It’s hard to know what to do for the best but I’m sure we will find a solution.”

The committee will discuss the issue at its next meeting on January 21.

Anyone with a suggestion can email pc@woodcote-online.co.uk or call (01491) 681861.
