Pole vaulter gives tips to school pupils

AN international athlete visited Valley Road Primary School in Henley to inspire pupils to get involved with sport.

AN international athlete visited Valley Road Primary School in Henley to inspire pupils to get involved with sport.

GB pole vaulter Jack Phipps, 19, talked to children about the importance of education in sports development.He also put them through their paces with a number of fitness exercises alongside gymnastics coach Rian Anderson-Street, from Sports 4 All UK.

Phipps, who is combining his bid to be involved in Rio 2016 with a business management degree at Loughborough University, said: “We want to get younger people into sport and understand athletes are able to compete in high level sports but still be involved in education.”

Phipps, currently competing at the European Athletic Junior Championships in Italy, spoke about the importance of living a healthy lifestyle.

Headteacher Tim Coulson said: “Having people like Jack in gives children the chance to see someone who does this at a high level, is an expert in his sport and is someone to aspire to. We like to give pupils the chance to do different things.”
