50 years of educating

PUPILS past and present attended the 50th anniversary celebration of Robert Piggott Infant School in Wargrave.

PUPILS past and present attended the 50th anniversary celebration of Robert Piggott Infant School in Wargrave.

The 130 children had made flags for a special assembly where they sang hymns and took turns reading out extracts from the school’s history. Each class said a prayer and there was a final blessing from the Rev Jon Drake, curate at St Mary’s Church in Station Road.

The youngest and oldest pupils, Louis Rousset, four, and Emily Young, seven, then blew out the candles on a birthday cake with the school’s first headteacher Ann Bushnell and the fourth and current head Sally Akers.

More than 30 guests attended the event and stayed behind afterwards to discuss their memories of the school and look at old pictures posted around the hall.

The school opened in 1963 with one class of 50 pupils from the village and it became the first school in Berkshire to have a swimming pool. Mrs Bushnell, 82, of Berkshire Road, Henley, said: “When I started, it was a very small school but over the years it has grown and grown. We knew it would grow but never thought that there would be this many children.” Mrs Akers said: “We particularly wanted to have Ann Bushnell here as the first headteacher and it was lovely for her to see how her legacy of good work has grown.

“I’m delighted with the children and the way they sang. We are blessed with musical ability in our school, which is something we celebrate and value strongly. It’s lovely to be able to share it.”

Wargrave parish councillor Marion Pope, who was involved in appointing all four headteachers, said: “The children and Sally are fantastic. The kids are so well behaved and are a credit to staff and parents.

“When I first came here the school was very small but as the population of Wargrave has increased it has had to expand.

“The site is lovely and the staff are brilliant. They work so well together, it’s like a family.”
