FAMILIES with children due to start primary school in September are being urged to ensure they don’t miss the applications deadline of next Thursday (January 15).

Oxfordshire County Council says parents or carers of children born between September 1, 2010 and August 31, 2011 should apply online where possible.

Primary or junior school applications also need to be made for children currently attending an infant school who were born between September 1, 2007 and August 31, 2008.

When applying parents are strongly advised to state three preferences and include their catchment school as one of these — even if it is their third preference school. This does not affect their chances of securing a place at their first-preference school.

Oxfordshire County Council was able to offer first- preference places for almost 90 per cent of children starting primary school in Oxfordshire in September.

The council still accepts postal applications but recommends families apply online as this helps speed up the applications process.

Postal application forms, as well as information booklets are available from all Oxfordshire schools and nurseries and reference copies of information booklets are available from libraries.
