Pre-school closes as pupil numbers drop

A PARTY has been held to mark the closure of Benson Pre—School.

A PARTY has been held to mark the closure of Benson Pre—School.

More than 40 people attended the event at the pre—school’s home in the youth hall on Oxford Road.

There were bouncy castles, games of cricket and football, arts and craft tables and a stall serving tea, coffee,  scones and homemade cakes.

The pre—school closed last Friday after its enrolment dwindled. The school was initially given a reprieve in April at a meeting of its committee, staff and parents when a motion to close it was narrowly defeated. But no new committee was found to run the establishment so it was forced to close.

A statement from the committee said: “The situation had become untenable from September 2015, with not only low numbers on the roll but no new committee and a financially unsustainable future. The committee wishes to thank staff for their patience and understanding.” A meeting in April heard the pre—school lost £5,700 last year and was forecast to lose more than £15,000 this year, with only three or four children due to continue in September.
