SHIPLAKE College has appointed three new members of staff.

Gareth Hughes will join the school as deputy head (academic) in September from Radley College, near Abingdon, where he is head of curriculum innovation.

Previously, he had taught geography and was an assistant housemaster before being made the head of geography in 2010.

Dr Hughes has a master’s degree in geography from Oxford University and completed his PhD in environmental risk at Cambridge University in 2008.

Away from the classroom, he has coached rowing, rugby, football and real tennis and is a gold level assessor for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

In his spare time, Dr Hughes enjoys foreign travel, surfing, cycling, triathlon, mountaineering, playing the guitar and supporting the Welsh rugby team. He is married to Rachel and the couple have a young daughter, Seren.

Richard Curran joins Shiplake as director of music to allow Paul Jones time to focus on his role as assistant head and lower school housemaster. He was head of the expressive arts faculty at the British School in Tokyo for six years. Tom Bayley will teach design and technology.

He has previously taught in schools in Reading, Wycombe and Slough.
