CHILDREN at Lewknor Primary School celebrated Chinese New Year with two visiting authors, Su Yen Hu

CHILDREN at Lewknor Primary School celebrated Chinese New Year with two visiting authors, Su Yen Hu and Lihui Wang. Headteacher Debbie Cole read aloud stories by the women, The New Year’s Beast and The Naughty Monkey. Mrs Cole said: ‘‘It is important the children learn that many different cultures make up modern British society and that diversity is something that should be embraced and celebrated. When children learn about different cultures they are more likely to empathise and respect people from all sorts of backgrounds and less likely to discriminate against them. The authors taught the children some basic Mandarin. Lihui Wang said: “Although Chinese New Year is not part of the curriculum, we really enjoy visiting schools and reading to children as it is a good way to develop cultural understanding.”
