Home Secretary joins fund-raising dinner

HOME Secretary Theresa May and sports presenters Ady Williams and Simon Thomas were among the guests at a fund-raising dinner for Sonning Primary School.

HOME Secretary Theresa May and sports presenters Ady Williams and Simon Thomas were among the guests at a fund-raising dinner for Sonning Primary School.

The black-tie evening, which was held at Sonning Golf Club, was attended by 115 people and raised £20,643 towards a new playground and sports facilities.

It was the first major event for a £100,000 appeal which was launched by the school’s parent-teacher association in September and has so far raised £32,055.

Mrs May, who is MP for Windsor and Maidenhead and lives in Sonning, gave the after-dinner speech and donated a bottle of House of Commons wine signed by herself and David Cameron.

Williams, a former Reading FC and Wales international footballer who now presents on BBC Radio Berkshire, compered the night and led the charity auction.

Also present were Thomas, a Sky Sports presenter and former Blue Peter host whose son Ethan attends the school, headteacher Luke Henderson, deputy head Gill Kelsall, chairwoman of governors Laurie Butler and Rev Alison Waters, vicar of St Andrew’s Church in Sonning and a governor.

Auction items included an Arsenal shirt signed by Thierry Henry, which went for £300, tickets to a recording of James Corden’s panel show A League Of Their Own (£575) and FA Cup semi-final tickets (£400).

Prizes were also donated by the French Horn Hotel in Sonning, Sonning Flowers, the golf club, Harley-Davidson, Reebok CrossFit Reading, Millennium Jewellery, Sabella Interiors and hair and make-up artist Lorraine Milligan.

Association spokeswoman Rachel Argent said: “We were blown away by how much we raised.

“There was a great atmosphere on the evening and we’ve had some lovely feedback from people who attended.

“Ady was a brilliant compere who made everyone laugh and really got a buzz going, especially during the auction, while Theresa gave an amusing and light-hearted speech about her political career.”
