Former Royals star to start On Your Bike

FORMER Reading FC captain Ady Williams will start this year’s On Your Bike.

FORMER Reading FC captain Ady Williams will start this year’s On Your Bike.

The BBC Radio Berkshire sports presenter has agreed to officiate at the 10th annual charity event in Sonning Common on April 24.

The ride will begin at 10.30am and will offer six-, 12- or 20-mile routes as well as a supervised playground cycle for small children.

Mr Williams, a keen cyclist, said: “Both my children were encouraged to get on bikes at an early age, as it’s important to try to create a fitness habit for life.

“I’ve had some spectacular trips abroad, cycling the steep and sunny Spanish hills with my mates.

“I love the challenge of going uphill, probably because I’m a bit of a coward going downhill at speed! I’ve always enjoyed watching the big tours, particularly the Tour de France.

“What’s great about On Your Bike is it’s something the whole family can do together, regardless of age or ability.”

The proceeds will be shared between Sonning Common Primary School, Sue Ryder and the cardaic care unit at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading.

Penny Snowden, who founded event, said: “We’re thrilled Ady’s taking the time to start our 10th anniversary ride.

“He’s a great role model but also an entertaining after dinner speaker and MC, so he’s the perfect person to inspire our riders.

“I know lots of children taking part are Royals’ fans and listen to Ady on the radio, so they’ll be excited.”

The cost of entry is £5 per person in advance or £8 on the day. The playground cycle costs £2. If you register for the ride before 9pm on April 10 there is a chance to win a bike donated by AW Cyles of Caversham.
