Oratory headmaster resigns in first year

THE headmaster of the Oratory School in Woodcote has resigned.

THE headmaster of the Oratory School in Woodcote has resigned.

Adrian Wyles, who has only been in post since September, will see out the rest of this academic year.

He will be replaced by Joseph Smith, who has been head of the Oratory Preparatory School in Goring Heath since 2010.

Mr Smith has a first class degree in English from the University of Liverpool, a postgraduate certificate in education from Brunel University and a masters in educational leadership from Buckingham University.

Before moving to the prep school, he was head of English and then a housemaster at Monkton Combe, boys’ boarding school in Bath, where he ran the Army section of the Combined Cadet Force and coached sport.

He is an inspector for the Independent Schools Inspectorate. He is married to Debbie, who is registrar at the prep school, and they have three children, Sebastian, who is at the Oratory, and Imogen and Tom, who are both at the prep school.

Mr Smith said “I am delighted and very excited to have been asked to lead the Oratory, a school with a fine history and a great future.

“My sadness at leaving the preparatory school after six years is tempered by my joy at being able to stay with the Oratory Schools’ Association — the Oratory ‘family’ as we call it — and to remain in this beautiful part of the world.”
