Church roof lead stolen

THIEVES stole lead from the roof of St Mary the Virgin Church in Ewelme.

THIEVES stole lead from the roof of St Mary the Virgin Church in Ewelme.

The church is believed to have been targeted in the last few weeks as the theft was only discovered following a storm and water was found in the building.

Churchwarden Chips Gell said: “Hymn books and kneelers were completely saturated before the hole was covered up.

“It was only because of the rain that this crime became apparent.

“It is very sad to think that these churches, which have been looked after and loved for so many centuries, are being treated in this way.”
