Distraction thieves steal pensioner’s bag at cemetery

A WOMAN who had her handbag stolen in the Fair Mile cemetery in Henley has warned mourners to beware.

The victim and her husband, who did not want to be named, were distracted by thieves using the same “flat tyre trick” which they were fooled with when they were in Spain a few years ago.

The woman, who is 67, said: “The cemetery is not the sort of place that you expect something like that to happen — it is a bit off.”

She had been tidying her father’s and grandparents’ graves when the theft took place.

The couple, from Sonning Common, had unlocked their car near the chapel to drop off their tools when a boy aged 13 or 14 came towards them and gesticulated that somebody had punctured their car tyre. As the woman and her 72-year-old husband walked round to the back of the car to look at the wheel, they saw the boy run away towards the cemetery exit, along with somebody they had not noticed previously.
