Farmer facing £200,000 bill from straw barn fire

A FIRE at a farm near Wargrave which burned for four days is feared to have caused more than £200,000 damage.

The blaze broke out in a barn full of straw at Newlands Farm in Loddon Drive on Wednesday evening last week.

Six fire crews were called to the scene and tackled the flames using floodwater from surrounding fields. The building was gutted.

Owner Clayton Belcher, who lives in Hurst, said a neighbour called him to tell him about the fire.

“I left straight away and was there about 10 minutes later,” he said. “The fire brigade were already there and one engine arrived at the same time I did.
