THIEVES caused up to £5,000 damage after they broke into a boat moored in Henley by lifting off its roof.
They stole a quilt, radio and binoculars from the 50ft Dutch barge before leaving the wheelhouse uncovered so that the upholstered seats were damaged by the rain.
Owner Peter Bentley, 67, said he was considering not mooring his “dream boat” in Henley in winter anymore.
He said: “I was dismayed but also mystified by the motivation. They have ignored the glass windows and prised the roof off its frame. It’s probably wrecked.
“To do so much damage when they could have broken a window to get in — it’s an enigma. It’s the equivalent of taking the roof off a car to get in.
