RESIDENTS of Wargrave are being warned to be vigilant after telephone fraudsters targeted a 98-year-old villager.
The woman received a phone call last week from a woman claiming to be a police officer in Hammersmith.
The caller said police had arrested a man who had admitted stealing money from her account and then asked for her bank details.
When the woman became suspicious, the caller suggested she hung up and then call them back. Instead, she called her son who told her to put the phone down immediately and not return the call.
Police say the fraudsters keep the line open so that any outgoing calls go straight to them and they can then obtain the victim’s bank details and send a courier to collect their bank card.
