Stowaways arrested after hiding in lorry

SEVEN suspected illegal immigrants were arrested after arriving outside the Henley home of Olivia Harrison.

SEVEN suspected illegal immigrants were arrested after arriving outside the Henley home of Olivia Harrison.

Her staff called the police after spotting the men getting out of a lorry outside Friar Park in Gravel Hill as the driver was making a delivery on Tuesday morning last week.

Officers caught five of them in an alley off Crisp Road and another was captured in Bell Street after being seen on CCTV in the town centre. The seventh man escaped in the woods above Gravel Hill but was arrested later.

The men were all aged from 20 to 40. Three were from Iran and the other four came from Syria, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Turkey.

Sgt Graham Pink, of Henley police, said two spoke broken English and explained that they had sneaked on to the lorry before it left France.

The driver had been travelling from Dresden and told police he hadn’t made a stop, except to cross the Channel, until he arrived in Henley and he did not know he was carrying the stowaways.

Sgt Pink said: “The men were waiting for him to stop at the side of a road so they could get out. It was a good response by our officers. The six were arrested within 15 minutes from them coming out of the lorry. We spent a couple of hours looking for the last one but he could have been anywhere with all that woodland.”

A Home Office spokesman said immigration enforcement officers were notified by Thames Valley Police.

He said: “The seven were taken to local police stations where they were interviewed by immigration enforcement staff.

“Five have been granted immigration bail while the Home Office deals with their cases. If they are found to have no right to remain in the UK they will face removal.

“The Afghan and Pakistani nationals have been detained pending their removal from the UK.”
