Appeal for five more retained firefighters

MORE firefighters are needed in Henley, according to the town’s new station commander.

Marcus Reay, 37, says recruitment is his top priority and he hopes to find at least five new retained firefighters to add to the 11 who serve currently.

He said: “There have been occasions when our crew has fallen a little bit short so we need more retained firefighters to make sure that is not an issue. We need people who are going to be committed to the job.”

Candidates need to be at least 18, have a reasonable fitness level and be able to pass basic tests including psychometric and maths questions.

They will need to be able to offer a minimum of 50 hours of cover per week.

Mr Reay, who will also cover Watlington, Goring and Wallingford as part of a newly created role, said: “Becoming a firefighter also benefits employers because firefighters pick up additional skills.”

Members of the public who are interested should visit the fire station in West Street on a Wednesday evening after 7pm.
