Owners mystified by theft of business advertising signs

SIGNS were stolen from outside two Henley businesses within the space of eight days.

SIGNS were stolen from outside two Henley businesses within the space of eight days.

One was taken from Henley Hair and Beauty in Bell Street and the other advertising Angie Best’s Metaphysical gym was stolen from Marlow Road on Thursday night last week.

The thefts come less than a month after a banner saying, “We have moved — Henley Nails and Brows” was taken from outside the former beauty salon in Greys Road car park.

Hayley Williams, a freelance hairdresser at Henley Hair and Beauty, said she couldn’t believe its sign had been taken.

“I thought Henley was one of the safest places but apparently there have been quite a few signs stolen,” she said. Mrs Williams said the culprit must have used a screwdriver to remove the 4ft by 2ft sign, which was fixed to the wall about 3ft 6in from the ground.

“You couldn’t just rip it off as it was fixed quite securely so that it wouldn’t blow away,” she said. “My husband put it up and he put glue in the screws.”

The sign said “Henley Hair and Beauty” and had an image of a girl’s head. An adjoining sign, which features a picture of a man’s head, was not taken. Mrs Williams said: “It makes it look as if we are a barber’s shop because that picture has been left behind but the girl is gone.”

Five members of staff had clubbed together to pay for the stolen sign, which cost £40.

Mrs Williams, who has reported the theft to the police, said she and her colleagues hoped to replace it but were concerned that the replacement might be stolen too.

“We are going to have to do something and we will have to see what happens with the police,” she said.

“We want to replace it but we don’t know how we can prevent it from happening again. We don’t want to have to take it in at night because we want people to see the signs when they drive past the business.”

Mrs Best, who has run her gym at the Henley Business School since January last year, was “gobsmacked” to find her sign had been stolen when she drove to work last Friday. The free-standing metal sign, saying “Angie Best’s Metaphysical Gym”, was mounted in a frame about waist high. It had been placed by the side of the road at the entrance to the school.

Mrs Best has not yet reported the theft to the police but is offering a free six-month membership to anyone who can help her track it down.

She said: “Unfortunately, we don’t have any cameras pointed at that area, so we don’t know much about who took it. I just don’t know what they would do with it, the miserable lot. I had it made about a year ago and it has stood there ever since without bothering anyone.”

Inspector Mark Harling, head of Henley police, said the thefts may be the result of “some sort of drunken high jinks”.

He added: “We would be very grateful for anyone with information to get in touch with us.”
