Vandals leave trail of destruction.. and their pick axe

A PICK axe was left in the wall of sports changing rooms during an attack by vandals. A £300 kissing

A PICK axe was left in the wall of sports changing rooms during an attack by vandals. A £300 kissing gate was also smashed at Bishopswood Sports Ground in Gallowstree Common.

Andy Davies, chairman of Rotherfield United FC, which owns the ground, called the vandalism “pretty disgusting”. “It’s not only annoying but it will be expensive as well,” he said. “It’s probably someone who doesn’t like our presence at Bishopswood.”

The incident took place between 10pm on September 22 and 7am the next day. The pick axe was found stuck in the wall of the portable changing rooms, which are due to be replaced by a £400,000 clubhouse. It had also been used to create other holes in the wall. The wooden gate, which is at the edge of the ground leading into the woods, was one of three installed by Sonning Common Green Gym to stop vehicles entering the ground.

Julia Booker, secretary of the Green Gym, said: “We’re pretty upset about it, not just because we put in the kissing gate but because it was put in for the football club for a good reason. They are doing a fantastic job with the pitches and obviously don’t want them to be messed up.

“Some people obviously do this sort of thing because they don’t have much else to do.”
