PAUL DANIELS has blamed his hybrid car after being caught speeding.
The 75-year-old magician was clocked doing 54mph in his Toyota Prius on London Road, Earley, a 40mph zone, in July.
Last week, he pleaded guilty at Oxford Magistrates’ Court and was fined £625 and ordered to pay £65 costs and a £62 victim surcharge.
Daniels, who appeared under his real name of Newton Edward Daniels, was given three points on his licence, taking his total to 12.
But he avoided a ban after telling the magistrates he needed his licence to care for his elderly mother.
The magician, who lives in Wargrave with his wife Debbie McGee, said: “I drive a hybrid car which is so quiet and it’s very easy to go too quick.
“You don’t realise the speed you are going and most of the time I have it on cruise control.”
But Daniels admitted he deserved his fine, adding: “I was caught speeding and that’s it. I’ve been driving a very long time with no accidents but the law is the law.
“I just went along to court and said, ‘I’m sorry, I’m guilty’ and that was all there was to it.”
