A BUSINESSMAN and his family were left homeless after a fire tore through their £3.5 million home.

Darren Browne, chief executive and a director of the Pertemps employment group, arrived home from shopping to find the three-storey property in The Warren, Caversham, ablaze.

The fire is said to have started in a first-floor bedroom at about 2.30pm on Sunday. Six crews of firefighters spent almost 22 hours battling the blaze, which caused plumes of thick black smoke and substantial damage.

They finally left the scene at about 2pm on Monday after finishing damping down. No one was hurt.

Meanwhile, homes in Caversham and Earley were without power on Christmas Eve. The outage happened at about 10.30am but Southern Electric engineers restored the power by about noon. The cause is not known.
