CATALYTIC converters are designed to remove toxins from vehicle emissions. They contain small amounts of three precious metals, platinum, palladium and rhodium.

Thames Valley Police say that in recent years the price of these metals has soared to record levels, so that catalytic converters can provide a substantial return for a thief for just a few minutes’ work. Ford Transit and Mercedes Sprinter vans and other vehicles with high clearance are said to be especially vulnerable.
