Memorial is damaged

THE war memorial in Wargrave has been damaged in a hit and run accident.

THE war memorial in Wargrave has been damaged in a hit and run accident.

A chunk of stone was knocked off the memorial in Mill Green, next to St Mary’s Church, at the weekend.

A meeting of the parish council on Monday heard that a red car or van reversed up the driveway of the church before hitting the memorial and then driving off.

Chairman Richard Bush said red paint was found on the memorial, which had been dislodged. “We are assuming someone did it and then ran off — they must have known about it,” he said.

“It could have been someone that parked and then backed up because it would be on their blind side.”

The council has appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

The damage should be covered by the council’s insurance.
