A CONMAN stole cash and gold jewellery from an elderly woman?s home in Watlington.

The haul included a gold ladies? pocket watch which is about 200 years old and a gold brooch with 21 seed pearls which is 100 years old.

Police said the incident happened at about 4.15pm on Tuesday last week, when the victim was gardening at her home in Howe Hill.

She saw the man on her doorstep and asked him what he was doing and he replied that he had been driving past when he hit a fence while swerving to avoid a dog.

The man then ran off and vaulted over a gate and got into a waiting vehicle.

The woman later went upstairs to find that her jewellery boxes had been emptied on her bed along with her bedside drawers and a wardrobe in another bedroom had also been searched.

Police said the man was white, aged 18 to 20, slim, 5ft 6in and clean shaven and was wearing a dark waterproof jacket and dark trousers with the hood pulled up to only show his face. The vehicle was a dark coloured car, possibly a saloon.
