Crash driver is banned

A MAN who wrote off a Henley councillor’s car when he crashed into it has been banned from driving for 18 months.

A MAN who wrote off a Henley councillor’s car when he crashed into it has been banned from driving for 18 months.

Devinder Hayre drove his BMW 5-series into Councillor Dylan Thomas’s stationary Saab 9-3 in Northfield End at 8.55am on Sunday, March 13 while driving into Henley.

Hayre, 46, of Forest Road, Ascot, admitted drink-driving when he appeared at Oxford Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

Cllr Thomas, who has since started a campaign for more traffic-calming measures in the Northfield End/Fair Mile area, said Hayre was “lucky” with his punishment.

“I am surprised it’s not more,” he said. “The saving grace is nobody was injured and that was down to luck rather than anything else.”

Hayre was also fined £1,500 and ordered to pay a £120 victim surcharge and £85 costs.

The crash was the second incident of a parked car belonging to Cllr Thomas being written off after a driver heading out of Henley collided with his Audi Q5 in June.
