Suspected gas or chemical leak in Henley

Henley town centre is currently closed off as emergency services deal with a suspected gas or chemical leak at WH Smith in Bell Street

HENLEY town centre is currently closed off as emergency services deal with a suspected gas or chemical leak at WH Smith in Bell Street.

Firefighters were called at about 2.45pm and witnesses report seeing staff and customers leave the store coughing and with streaming eyes.

The cause of the leak is not yet known.

Bell Street has been closed off to traffic and pedestrians from the junction with Hart Street to the one-way exit from Waitrose. The shopfront is also cordoned off, along with a rear entrance in Kings Road car park.

All the shops within the cordon have been evacuated and members of the public have gathered at the cordon in Market Place.

There are currently three fire engines and three ambulances at the scene, as well as a special operations unit in Kings Road car park.
