Council get pollution advice

THE Mayor Julian Brookes, David Nimmo Smith, chairman of the Transport Strategy Group, and other members of the group were treated to a very informative talk on November 25 by Simon Birkett, who is director of the Clean Air in London campaign and advises the UN environment programme on air pollution.

His presentation gave some of the background to air quality issues in general and then specifically in the capital.

He then gave a constructive critique of the various measures put together by this group and offered us very helpful advice on their possible implementation and effectiveness.

After the meeting, Mr Birkett said: “I was thrilled to be invited to speak to the Mayor, councillors and others about the desperate need for action to reduce air pollution in Henley.”

He pinned the blame firmly on the increased use of diesel vehicles and said: “Important steps are already underway, such as plans for a 20mph zone.”

The group has put together a proposed package of measures to ease congestion and to improve air quality in the town.

These recommendations will go to a meeting of Henley Town Council after which the public will be asked to comment on them.
