Don’t take sparklers

VISITORS to a fireworks display in Wargrave are being urged not to bring sparklers.

Organisers of the annual display, which will be held at Kings Field off East View Road on Saturday, November 5, say handheld fireworks pose a health and safety risk.

Visitors will be provided with glowsticks to hold during the event instead.

Scout leader Pete Fry said: “Every year we ask folks not to bring sparklers for two reasons.

“Firstly, for health and safety — they are unbelievably hot and we have had to deal with burnt fingers where they have slid down into gloves.

“Secondly, the event is held on a sports field so we have to go round the following morning combing the field for twisted bits of wire to ensure none of the footballers gets hurt the next time a match is played.”

Mr Fry said some visitors had ignored his plea in previous years, so it was decided to introduce glowsticks.

“We thought this year we could supply an alternative and maybe fewer folks would ignore the plea,” he said.
