Counselling can help us gain understanding

Most people experience stress at some point in their lives. A certain amount of pressure is healthy, providing a source of motivation — which energises us to achieve our goals. However, too much stress can be detrimental to our health, resulting in physical and emotional issues.

Counselling can help us gain an insight and understanding into our thought processes, which are often unhelpful. These can be deep-rooted and result in automatic negative reactions and behaviour.

In the therapy process, the counsellor can help a person anticipate events and guide them to learn how to respond differently. It is often not the event itself that causes the stress, but the way we interpret that event.

As a person gains a greater awareness of their views and beliefs, their potential to adapt to situations in a healthy and flexible manner is increased.

Making sense of our experience in the world and learning to take responsibility for ourselves can make the difference between living life to the full and merely existing.
