THE Mill at Sonning is simply stunning. Although best-known for its fantastic shows, the ambience of the newly-refitted bar level is something to behold.
My guest and I were seated in an elegant area close to the beautifully-lit bar which had a magical view of the workings of the mill.
We began with starters of vegetable samosas, which came with a very generous salad, and a handmade pork, prune and chestnut sausage roll. Both had rustic appeal and the delectable pastry made for a very palatable and fresh start to the meal.
Moving on, we shared a cheese platter, which was full of locally-sourced cheeses, such as Berkshire Waterlooville and Oxfordshire blue, both were incredibly flavoursome.
The cheese was served with walnuts, grapes and honey in addition to some very moreish crackers — the desserts that were to follow would certainly be a challenge.
But while we waited we immersed ourselves in the beautiful music from Phantom of the Opera and a beautiful Bellini.
What came next was a selection of freshly-made cakes, vintage bonbons, a Jaffa slice, lemon curd shortbread and pumpkin seed and apricot flapjacks were a naughty but nice conclusion.
The Mill at Sonning is a family owned sight to behold that we all should frequent to appreciate the times gone by and the modern twist that this venue has very cleverly brought to our locality.
